Flowers only have a small window of blooming, and they can require deadheading, staking, and fussing. So when you find a plant that can bring vibrant color into the garden without flowers, it’s time to start planting! Be careful, though. Once you add one to your garden, you’ll end up planting a new variety in every color.

Coral bells (aka heuchera) are a beautiful shade-friendly perennial plant. They come in so many colors and have beautiful ruffled evergreen foliage. It comes in a wide variety of colors, including cinnamon caramel, dark plum, bright chartreuse, and frosted silver (to name a few).

They make wonderful shade garden companions amongst the hostas, ferns, and brunnera. Or They also function well as a leafy color contrast to other plants and flowers in different container gardening arrangements.

Coral bells are a semi-evergreen perennial, so the foliage can be enjoyed in all four seasons. Some even change colors with the season. If the leaves are damaged and brown, they can be snipped off, and they will regrow from the base. So let’s dive into the beautiful, whimsical world of heuchera with a list of 31 different varieties for your garden.

The leaves also have a bit of a marbled green look to it, which adds an extra layer of dimension. It is the perfect plant to use if you are looking for a way to make the details in some hostas pop.

If you have a hosta with dark and light green leaves, such as ‘Guacamole’, placing it near a bright green key lime pie heuchera will make it shine. I also like using this variety in containers. It’s very reliable and practically maintenance-free. It flowers dainty pink flowers in the summer.

Splendens is a low-key variety. It has medium green foliage that is lobed in the classic heuchera style. But what makes this variety stand out is the very bright and bold red flowers that rise up from its green leafy foliage.

It is a bold red color, but the texture is fine and soft, making it an interesting bloom to add to your perennial garden. It blooms in the early summer, and I find the blossoms last quite a long time.

This variety of coral bell is especially heat tolerant, making it a great choice for southern gardeners. I love its large leaves that are a bright copper color which eventually mellow out to a more peachy color as the season wears on.

Such as a chartreuse hosta or golden creeping Jenny. Or take it off the ground and place it in a brightly colored pot. It blossoms delicate white flowers that bloom from pinkish-colored buds.

‘Spellbound’

‘Spellbound’ is a bright berry purple variety with frosted leaves. It has large ruffled leaves, which make a great contrast to hostas in the garden. For more silvery leaves, put this heuchera in more shade. Or, for more of the intense berry purple color, put this variety in a sunnier spot.

This variety looks really rich and beautiful when next to green foliage. Place underneath a cedar in a container for a great combination.

‘Villas Autumn Bride’

It forms a big mound of leafy foliage that creates a lush look in the garden. The leaves have a fizzy feel to them, giving it some added texture in the garden. In the late summer, this plant sends up spikes of lovely white flowers, the perfect thing to brighten up the shade.

‘Peppermint Spice’

‘Peppermint Spice’ is a work of art that is stunning in almost any garden. The leaf details are amazing. It has a margin of green around the edges and a frosted middle. Then it has bold reddish veins that shoot through it.

This heuchera would be great just like that, but on top of all that it blooms stalks of coral color flowers that really pop. This is a perfect plant in both gardens and containers. Place it in areas where people can really enjoy its intricacies up close.

Tokyo is a lovely bright green variety. The leaves are bright green and lightly frosted with silver. The silver will be more prominent in shadier areas.

It has lots of spikes of bright red flowers that bloom later in the summer. The cherry red blooms are really set off by the bright lime green foliage. This variety would look great in a container on its own.

Pair it with ferns and other green plants for a striking combination. This variety blooms pink in the late summer. The blooms on this heuchera are quite lovely. Their bright pink flowers really pop against its dark foliage.

  • Foliage Color: Green and Red
  • Flower Time: Summer
  • Height: 1′
  • Width: 1′

I love the color-changing varieties of heuchera. They seem to shapeshift for every season. Tiramisu starts off as a bright yellow heuchera with shocks of red through the veins. The brick color is intense in the center and fades towards the margin.

Then in the summer, the red begins to fade away entirely, and it takes on a lightly frosted appearance. It flowers white, but it’s the color-changing foliage that is the main feature of this variety.

It is a great way to break up the monotonous greens in a garden without even adding a flower. It flowers creamy white flowers that are pink in the center.

This variety especially pops when placed next to silver foliage plants. Try placing it in a container with dichondra ‘Silver Falls’ trailing out.

This variety is great for areas in your garden where you want to break up the green. I also like it in a pot. It adds a jolt of bright yellow foliage. Try mixing it in a pot with other varieties of heuchera.

‘Ginger Ale’

Close-up of a gardener holding a potted heuchera Ginger Ale in a black plastic pot against a backdrop of lush red and ginger heuchera foliage. The bush consists of many heart-shaped leaves with wavy edges in pleasant ginger and pale amber hues with distinct veins.

  • Flower Color: White
  • Foliage Color: Green
  • Flower Time: Summer
  • Height: 1′
  • Width: 1.5′

This green variety of coral bell is all about the blooms. The leaves are small and fairly nondescript. But it blooms lots of long stalks of beautiful white flowers.

The flowers are a fine texture, almost like an astilbe. ‘White Spires’ would be perfect to naturally illuminate a pathway in a moon garden.

Final Thoughts

Flowers in a garden come and go. Coral bells are beautiful plants with minimal blooms that can brighten up any garden space. Their colors and textures will highlight your garden, and their short-lived flowers are just a bonus.

Tuck them into any part shade-shade area of your garden, and they will instantly break up the sea of green that is often present. The ruffled leaves also add interest. Consider adding a heuchera or two to your garden this season. And don’t forget about adding them to your containers for some added foliage interest.
