Petunias are a classic perennial or annual and a gardening favorite among many. Their colorful blooms with lasting color make them a gardening favorite. With proper sunlight and water, petunias will not disappoint.

Petunias are technically perennials but in most hardiness zones they are annuals. In zones 10 and 11, petunias will bloom all year long for a number of years. If you live in zones 2 to 9, petunias will only survive from spring to the first frost.

With so many varieties of petunias, how do you even begin to choose? Purple is a classic and regal color that looks amazing in landscapes, flower beds or hanging baskets. You have choices from cascading varieties to varieties that are compact and keep a mounding form.

Looking for a variety that spreads and you never have to deadhead? Look no further than lilac ice petunias. These gorgeous petunias produce a silvery-white bloom with deep lilac colored veins with a dark purple center.

This variety was bred specifically for baskets and other vertical settings. They can trail up to 3 to 4 feet long. Like most petunias, they are heavy feeders that benefit from weekly fertilizer. Choose a fertilizer that works best for you and that will give your petunias proper nutrients.

Although they look black, they are actually a deep violet color. The beautiful dark trumpet flowers will bloom from late spring to first fall frost. This petunia is more compact and will only cover 10 to 12 inches.

If you choose to grow black petunia by seed, be cautious. The seeds have a tendency to produce lavender or pink flowers, not black. It’s best to purchase potted black velvet petunias from a reputable nursery.
