17 Miniature Rose Varieties for Compact Garden Spaces

Are you looking to make the most of a small garden or patio space? Miniature roses, with lots of colorful blooms on a compact plant, might be the solution for you. Often mistakenly discarded as annuals, miniature roses are just as hardy and long-lived as their full-size counterparts. In this article, expert gardener and rose enthusiast Danielle Sherwood shares her top miniature roses for small garden spaces.

Miniature roses are just small versions of the large varieties we all know and love. They come in the same types and bloom forms, and because they are grown on their own roots, can be even hardier than popular full-size grafted roses.

Miniature roses do not thrive in indoor environments. They need 6-8 hours of direct sunlight, well-drained soil, and feeding in the form of fertilizer or compost to perform well. If you received a miniature rose from the grocery store in a small pot that is now looking sad, you can transplant it outside! Once in the garden, you’ll be surprised at how well it takes off.

As advised for all roses, you need to verify that the mini rose is hardy in your climate zone and water it regularly. If you keep it in a pot, make sure to provide winter protection to protect the roots from freezing.

Remember that miniature normally refers to the bloom and foliage size, rather than the mature size of the entire plant. Some miniatures can grow up to 7 ft. tall! In this article, I’ll list my favorite miniature roses that are great performers in a variety of climates, and perfect for small garden spaces.

‘Life’s Little Pleasures’

I received this miniature rose in an average supermarket gift pot a few years ago. The little pot actually contained 5 separate roses (a common tactic to make it look fuller), which I separated and planted in a sunny spot outside.

They have flourished and come back every year, despite severe winter conditions in my zone 5 garden. I now have a gorgeous little hedge of double lavender and pink roses.

‘Life’s Little Pleasures’ has a delicate appearance, but is a sturdy and prolific little rose. It has a lovely light scent, and the blooms make delightful bouquets. I highly recommend it for its unusual lavender color and hardiness.
