Sowing Info

When to Sow Outside: RECOMMENDED. 4 to 6 weeks before your average last frost date, when soil temperature is at least 40°F, ideally 60°–80°F and again 10 to 12 weeks before your average first frost date. In Mild Climates, sow in fall or winter for winter harvest. Best grown in temperatures less than 85°F.

Growing Info

Harvesting: Shelling peas should be harvested when the pods are plump, about 3 weeks after flowering. Peas that are too mature are tough and will cause the plant to stop producing; therefore, harvest regularly when pods are at their peak. Use scissors to harvest or hold vine with one hand and pick the pods with the other; vines are fragile.

    Amazing heat resistance!

I picked up this packet on a whim at a garden center and direct sowed at the end of march (Pacific Northwest, zone 9a). They struggled to get started during our cold and wet spring, so I assumed I must have done something wrong; but they really started taking off at the end of May, and I was getting great harvests through July even with powdery mildew. I have crazy temperature swings in my microclimate, my thermometer often reading low 60s at night to nearly 100 degrees during the day during the heat waves we get in the summer. All my summer veggies really struggle with this every year, but these peas just kept on producing. My last harvest was in August before I finally put them out of their misery. The sweetest peas I've ever tasted (to be fair, it was my first time tasting fresh peas straight out of the garden)! Can't recommend them enough.

    Shelling peas review

We've had weird spring weather here in Missouri zone 6b..and I have never grown peas before. I had fair germination with tĥese, but the grew poorly, andnit may have been the b warmer weather and TONS of rain

I had better luck with snap peas I grew in a different garden bed, which I planted earlier in the season..

    Hey Susan,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience with the Green Arrow Shelling Pea Seeds, and I completely understand how challenging those weather conditions must have been for your first pea-growing adventure!

You're absolutely right that peas can be quite finicky when it comes to weather - they really do prefer those cooler, more consistent spring conditions, and all that rain combined with warmer temperatures can definitely throw them off their game. It sounds like you learned something valuable about timing too, since your snap peas planted earlier in the season had better success!

Weather aside, it's great that you got some germination and gave shelling peas a try for the first time. Every growing season teaches us something new, and it sounds like you're already picking up on those important timing and placement insights that will serve you well in future seasons.

Thank you for sharing your honest experience - it's really helpful for other gardeners to hear about real-world growing conditions. Keep on growing 🌻️
