Viparspectra Review: Are These LEDs Worth It?

With the explosion of hydroponics, indoor growing, and the LED grow light industry, it’s no surprise that there are a ton of companies in the market right now.

A few years ago, LEDs were all the rage and companies were touting incredible yields with low energy costs…

It wasn’t completely false, but the marketing claims were far greater than the lights actually produced in practice.

These days, the LED grow light industry has matured from both a product and marketing perspective. One popular player in the industry is Viparspectra, a Chinese company whose lights are popular for beginner growers.

In this article, I’m going to take a look at their product line and give my Viparspectra review from top to bottom. We’ll look at:

  • The features they offer
  • The build quality of their lights
  • All of the specifications
  • Their warranty policy

This is a long and meaty review piece, so if you just want the quick take on Viparspectra as a brand, here it is:

Overall, Viparspectra LED grow lights are a solid choice for beginner and mid-tier growers. They offer LED lights at an affordable price point, partially because the manufacturer themselves are selling these lights instead of going through a wholesaler or distributor.

On top of that, they offer a 3-year warranty and a 30-day exchange, money back, or repair policy for any lights that stop working in 30 days, which gives a buyer a lot of flexibility on a dud light.

While there are objectively better LED grow lights on the market, Viparspectra themselves state that they aim to be mid-market for hobbyist and intermediate growers, and I think they occupy that space well.

They’re a solid pick if you’re getting started with indoor growing.

Viparspectra is a brand owned by the Chinese company Shenzhen Bailuo Technology Co., Ltd. They’re based in Guangdong, China and are bringing LED directly to market themselves instead of going through a distributor or middleman.

This is one reason why their LEDs are less expensive than comparable models — by going direct to Amazon and other retailers from China, they’re able to avoid markups that distributors and wholesalers typically charge.

As far as the quality of their lights, their stated aim is, “…to stay somewhere in the middle with well designed, well made fixtures, at reasonable prices and no unnecessary extras.”

What Type of LEDs Do They Use?

Viparspectra uses a combination of Bridgelux and Epileds, both well-known LED manufacturers that makes quality chips. They use chips in the following spectrum ranges:

  • Infrared – 730nm
  • 660nm
  • 630nm
  • 615nm
  • 595nm
  • 580nm
  • 475nm
  • 460nm
  • 445nm
  • 440nm
  • 3000K
  • 7500K

This is a full spectrum LED array, meaning it’s possible to grow most plants through their entire lifecycle without having to switch lights (a problem you run into when growing with only metal halide or high pressure sodium lights).

More importantly, all Viparspectra lights come with a Vegetative and Bloom switch, meaning you can turn off a specific spectral range of the lights to manipulate the spectrum that you’re giving your plants.

Viparspectra’s Warranty

Whenever you buy a LED grow light, it’s important to check the warranty that the company offers. I can’t tell you how many times I hear about people buying a light and it dies on them in the first month of operation. To protect against that, the better companies offer a warranty that covers any initial light failures. The best companies offer even more protection than that. The quality of a light manufacturer’s warranty is a direct signal as to how much they believe in the product that they’re making and selling to you.

Here is the standard warranty that Viparspectra provides, found on all of its products:

1. We offer three years warranty for all of our products purchased against manufacturing defects, from the date of purchase. If you need warranty assistance, please contact us as soon as possible.

2. The warranty does not cover damage due to high moisture levels, water, power surges, improper hanging/mounting, improper use, dust build-up or user modifications.

3. For buyers in the USA, if any lights stop working within 30 days, you can choose:

(A) Exchange. We will email you a pre-paid return label, please ship the light back to our USA warranty center. A replacement will be sent to you for free as soon as we receive the defective light.

Product Line

Reflector-Series

True to its name, the Reflector-Series is a line of lights from Viparspectra that offer built-in reflectors to help direct all of the light down towards your plant canopy instead of scattering it around your grow tent or grow room.

The most popular lights in the Reflector-Series are the 450w and the 600w models, mostly due to the fact that most growers are in the mid-range as far as the size of their grow goes. Larger growers will often buy a few 450w or 600w models and run them instead of opting for the 900w or 1200w model.

Save for the wattage difference, there isn’t a whole lot of difference between the different models in the Reflector-Series. All of them come with the following:

  1. what does it make it a beginner to intermediate light? the maximum yield that you get? if it has certain amount of w they should all yield the same or not? i don’t understand how is one light better than the other if you compare it to another light with the same wattage. Sorry for my bad english. im from agerntina.

    • Yeah, it’s just not for a ‘serious’ grower per se. As in someone that is growing for a living and wants to get 100% of possible yield. There are better lights, but they all cost a lot more…so these are great for hobbyists!

  2. I just bought vs 600parr reflector and noticed that the red spectrum seems a bit low for flowering but great for veg. I can understand why a person would end up with a different out come with a different light, but they don’t do to the fact they are not checking to see if it has same spectrum ranges and wattage. Maybe you could receive me a way to increase my red spectrum with this light as that spectrum helps with building flowers and densities within. Would you agree… And could you help as I am about a mid level Gardner trying led for first time

Have already used the viparspectra 600w for 3 months, my friend recommended the cheaper meizhi 600w to me after I ordered the viparspectra 600w, and they also have same look, then I bought two meizhi 600w, I started to grow with the viparspectra 600w and meizhi 600w in different tent, the plants under viparspectra 600w grow bigger than meizhi 600w in VEG, I thought the viparspectra 600w are better than meizhi 600w, but I changed my mind when I got the yields, the viparspectra 600w yield lower, only about 0.65 gram per watt, and meizhi got about 1.2 gram per watt, almost double! Considering the price and the performance, meizhi 600w are much better than viparspectra 600w, now, I plan to return the viparspectra 600w or sell it to others!

  4. When would one get the PAR600 rather than the V600?

    I see their wattages (wall) are different as well as their PAR ratings (for instance at 18″ there is a huge difference).

    I would also not know how to adjust the PAR600 to get the optimal range of adjustment. Does it come with any kind of instructions for that? Or is it better to just get the V600?

    • Chief difference between those two is one is dimmable (PAR600) and other has the switches (V600). If you don’t want to deal with the dimmable, I’d probably opt for the V600 > PAR600. It’s much cheaper, as well ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. Agree.

    Stupid me. Dropped an abject into a cooling fan on the 900 model. Broke the fan. Vipar sent a new fan no charge at all. Put the fan in myself. Can replace parts on Vipar products. Still using the light. That not bad pr.
    Removed all the plastic covers on the light got an 8% lumen increase on coverage. Sorry can’t measure par.
